A Busy Baking Evening


  
The kitchen clock read 9:34 on the night before Jack's third birthday party.  Much baking was to be completed.  Jack's mother was exhausted, for the whole day had been spent baking.  
  White flour coated the countertops, along with the family dog.  Bowls of icing and cake batter were scattered around.  Whenever his mother had not been looking, Jack would quickly sneak a spoonful of sweet buttercream icing into his small mouth.  
  The tempting smell of German chocolate cake strayed from the oven.  The bright red strawberry cupcakes that were cooling beside the oven had an even more irresistible scent.
  A timer went off.  It sounded like a telephone ringing.  Jack's mother hurried over to the oven to remove the German chocolate cake from the oven rack.  With a thump, she set the pan of brown deliciousness next to the cupcakes to cool.  
  After the cake cooled, it was cut to appear as the number three.  The numerous scraps of cake were given to the exceedingly delighted Jack.  The almost-three-year-old's taste buds danced around inside his mouth.  
  Jack's color of choice, red, was chosen to be used as the icing color for the cake.  However, when the red food coloring was mixed with the white icing the icing turned a vibrant pink!  To avoid the pink color, tiny, red sugar crystals were sprinkled all over the cake.  
  The strawberry cupcakes were the last thing that needed to be completed.  Smooth, strawberry flavored icing was carefully iced onto the top of each small cupcake.  Round, red candies were placed on top for looks.  
  Jack's mother cleaned the messy kitchen and put the finishing touches on all of the desserts.  The kitchen clock read 11:03 and a drained mother went to bed.
